Hiawatha Bray: "If a player feels his character, or Sim, is being ill treated and can get no justice from the game operators at EA, he can arrange to have bad things happen to rival players, by approaching a local Mafia and ponying up some of the game's currency, called simoleons." [Scripting News]

This is an amusing bit.  Turns out SimsOnline is turning into a real American city, replete with organized crime, hookers, and assorted miscreants.  Sounds like loads of fun.  Electronic Arts seems to not be reining it in, but the final paragraph of the piece speaks volumes:
"Sociolotron might appeal to the more vulgar Sims Online players, leaving the decent folk in peace. Then again, the Sims Online has been a big disappointment to EA, attracting just 80,000 subscribers, compared to 650,000 for Sony's online game Everquest. The company can ill afford to lose loyal players -- no matter how tacky they may be." It is, after all, about the money and that means subscribers and if the freaks pay up, well there you go.

hcg50a writes "Wired has a story about the random words which have recently been appearing in spam. Antispam experts agreed that this isn't a brand-new technique, but said the addition of potentially filter-foiling gibberish is rapidly becoming a common component of spam."  [Slashdot]

Now if I could remember who I was talking to about this very subject... Bottom line, it doesn't really help the spammer get through.

Law Librarians and Blogs.

Academic law librarians are becoming more involved in law schools' efforts to promote blogging. I know Dave has a few librarians in his Thursday night group (I met a couple on my trip to Boston in November), but I don't know if they are law librarians. I wonder if he works with the law library at Harvard at all to promote his weblog community project. They would be a great asset... [Library Stuff]
