"Samba" Open Source Server For Windows Desktops Upgraded To Enhance NT 4 Migration (TechWeb). TechWeb - Samba was upgraded to Version 3.0 on Thursday. The new version is designed to make migrating from Windows NT 4 easier, and supports Kerberos authentication, LDAP directory services, and integrates with Microsoft Active Directory. Samba is an open source project that allows Windows clients to connect to servers running Linux and other operating systems for file-sharing printing and user authentication. [Yahoo! IBM Files New Claims Against SCO in Linux Case (Dow Jones). Dow Jones - BOSTON -- International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - News) has filed new counterclaims against SCO Group Inc. (NasdaqSC:SCOX - News) in the closely watched case involving the Linux operating system, according to a memo sent to the IBM sales force. [Yahoo! News - Technology]

IBM claims SCO violated its copyrights by violating the GPL with regard to SCO's Linux distro.

@Stake Makes a Mistake. Security firm @stake made a grave mistake by apparently firing one of its leading security experts following his decision to take part in a study that found Microsoft's desktop monopoly hazardous to good security [Microsoft Watch from Mary Jo Foley]

There's a ton of stuff going on around this story.  For example, in a Yahoo article linked to from the above piece, the publisher of CIO magazine declined to mail a paid announcment about the study to subscribers claiming the study was too one sided.  Now CIO often sends pro-MSFT mailings that are definitely one sided.  Obviously the publishers know who's paying the bills.
