Ken Treis writes "SANS Internet Storm Center is reporting on a new strain of IE Malware. This one targets bank customers, which in itself is nothing new. But the catch is in the way it does it: it installs a Browser Help Object (BHO) that can capture login information before it is encrypted, and 'watches for HTTPS (secure) access to URLs of several dozen banking and financial sites in multiple countries.'."

Microsoft Targets Nonprofessional Programmers. A new, stripped-down versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server can be used to write simple Web applications. [InternetWeek]

"The products are aimed at "the next generation of IT professionals," said Eric Rudder, Microsoft senior VP of servers and tools, in a statement. The products will be available for download later this week on Microsoft's Web site. "

Apparently the next generation of IT professionals are expected to be dumber than the current crop and therefore less likely to question the MSFT lock-in that comes with these sorts of things.  IMHO, anyone who uses a 'stripped-down' version of anything isn't very professional and probably knows little about IT.

FormEntry 1.7. FormEntry allows you to to generate an HTML interface for one or more SQL tables. This allows users to maintain the content of the tables through HTML forms rather than entering SQL commands through a terminal. Since the forms are generated by this PHP application, there is no need for users to understand the details of HTML forms. FormEntry allows you to describe the column data with complex expressions to make it more difficult for users to enter data incorrectly. [freshmeat.net]

InformationWeek > Security > Microsoft Blames Hackers, Not Vulnerability, For Web Attack > June 28, 2004 "The Web attack that was stopped dead in its tracks on Friday when a Russian Web site was taken offline remained under investigation Monday by a host of security firms still puzzled over the method used to infect a number of Microsoft Internet Information Services servers. But the evidence now is leading them to accept Microsoft's explanation that the IIS 5.0 servers were hacked manually and that the server software doesn't have an unknown vulnerability. "

How to create OpenOffice.org forms. In some situations, you want to create a document that contains some fixed text, but allows users to enter some items and perhaps take some actions on those items. Such a document is called a form, analogous to the preprinted forms everyone has filled out dozens of times. You can create custom forms in most of the OOo applications; forms you create without the Form AutoPilot don't have to connect to a data source (though they can -- see "How do I attach a data source to a form?" below). If the form isn't connected to a data source, information the user enters there is simply saved with the form. (You might do that when you want to send a form to a group of people for them to fill out and return.) Writer, HTML Editor, Calc, Impress, and Draw all support forms. [NewsForge]

Jim Hall writes "The FreeDOS Project turns 10 years old today! PD-DOS was announced to the world on June 28, 1994. The PD-DOS project was later renamed to the FreeDOS Project. We've come a long way in 10 years. Today, FreeDOS is ideal for anyone who wants to bundle a version of DOS without having to pay a royalty for use of DOS. FreeDOS will also work on old hardware, in DOS emulators, and in embedded systems. FreeDOS is also an invaluable resource for people who would like to develop their own operating system. While there are many free operating systems out there, no other free DOS-compatible operating system exists. Read more about the FreeDOS Project history in the About FreeDOS page."
