Web surfers snubbing search engines. With advances in technology, particularly browsers, people are favoring direct navigation and bookmarks over search engines and Web links, a new study shows. [CNET News.com]

WebSideStory, a San Diego, Calif.-based company that measures Internet audiences, said that as of Feb. 6, nearly 52 percent of Web surfers arrived at sites by direct navigation and bookmarks, compared with about 46 percent during the same period last year.

Interesting.  I use Google more than ever, though I do rely heavily on links I post to my weblog.

Port 80, the standard HTTP port, is more often than not left open on firewalls. Because of this I've often found it safe to use HTTP to transfer data through firewalls. Chastened Comcast will stop tracking customer Web use COMCAST ACKNOWLEDGED WEDNESDAY that it had begun tracking and storing information on its cable Internet service subscribers' Web usage, but said it will end the practice immediately in response to customer concerns.
The announcement followed press reports that Comcast was using Inktomi software to track Web sites popular with its customers. Comcast planned to keep cached copies of frequently visited Web pages on proxy servers to speed load times, according to the Associated Press.
