Automatic Personalized Search at the Internet Archive. Anna Patterson is the Queen of the geeks, at least for me :-) On the side, while pregnant, she wrote a search engine for the Internet Archive which clocks in at 150,000 lines of plain POSIX C code for the indexer and 50,000 lines for the server side, with some neat features like automatic personalization. Wow. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service: O'Reilly Weblogs] 5:58:38 PM ![]() |

Four Linux Live CDs, The Executive Summary
from the guerilla-marketing-tool-of-choice dept. prostoalex writes "ExtremeTech published a review of 4 Linux live distributions that do not require installation and run off a CD. Knoppix, Feather Linux, Gnoppix and MEPIS Linux were researched, with Knoppix winning the competition (and Gnoppix not graded, since it's still in beta)." One more (of the seemingly infinite number of live distros) I've recently tried and been happy with is called Slax, and is what it sounds like -- a live Slackware distribution. Slax worked great with my finicky older Toshiba laptop. (However, slax.org appears to be down.) [Slashdot] 10:47:15 AM ![]() |
