IT Organizations in Law Schools

RE: Keith Barton's post to teknoids - IT Organization:  This is a chunk from the teknoids.net SuperSurvey, Spring 2002.  It may be a bit dated, but still valid.  It may be time to rerun this survey, or break it into parts for easy consumption.  Another thing to take a look at is the Library Director Tech Briefing -IT Staff from the 2002 CALI conference, especially the section on the current state of law school IT. Notes on CSS and HTML validationNotes on CSS and HTML validation www2.cali.org - 11/12/03; 12:52:17 PM by EM
  • Several changes were made to the new site's style sheet including a change from fixed width to percentage for font size and the use of hex for all color names. The sheet, nucss.css, now validates as CSS2.0 compliant.
    • This is now in CVS and pushed to production.
  • HTML validation is more difficult. This requires a more careful eye on the code generated by Dreamweaver and phpED since both seem to play fast and loose with the HTML4.0 standard. In additon old coding habits die hard.
    • Biggest challenge: Forms. The 'name' attribute has been changed to 'id'. I haven't fully assessed the impact of this on things like qForms, but I am checking it out. There are a slew of other optional things that can be thrown into forms to make them more accessible, but several break the submission process at least as seen by PHP.
    • A lot of other things are fixed by doing search and replace. For example DW leaves off quotes around some values, but HMTL4 requires them, so, identify the code and insert the quotes.
    • The use of '&' as a data seperator in URLs is problematic also. HTML4 sees '&' as the beginning of an entity, but we are using it to seperate data in URLs. The fix is to substitute '&' (en entity, ironically enough) for '&' and let the agent do the substitution. PHP has a setting in php.ini to accomplish this for auto-generated URLs. That leaves bunches of hand coded ones that now nee to be fixed.
