teknurd writes "Wired has an article about the growing problem of computer users having to call tech support to get help removing all of the spyware on their computers. 'The fast-growing phenomenon is already responsible for more than 12 percent of all technical support calls in Dell's consumer hardware division, the biggest category of complaints this year, company representatives said.' Personally, I have had to remove this plague from the computers of several friends and family members."

Learning to use Audacity. Audacity is a free-as-in-GPLd, cross-platform sound editor for Windows, Mac, and Unix. I've recently spent some time learning how to use it. I can tell you already that it's a gem, ranking up there in my all-time top ten list of free Linux applications. Before the review police start whacking away on this story, let me make one thing perfectly clear: this is not a review. I'll leave that to those who know a lot more about sound engineering than I do. This is the tale of an ordinary user learning to how use a kick-ass application. [NewsForge]

LawLibTech: Westlaw Delivers RSS!

LawLibTech: Westlaw Delivers RSS!:"Westlaw Intraclips can now be delivered via RSS! "

I'm looking into this in as far as it can be used by law schools.  Maybe now we'll see more activity around RSS and aggregators in law schools.

A Quick Review
  • Here is a sample feed
  • You'll need to edit existing clips to add RSS
  • The feeds are valid RSS 0.92, making them useful just about everywhere
  • The articles in the feed are text only. This is 'feature' of Westlaw that harkens back to the bad old days of dial-up term access.
  • The titles of the publications that generate the articles are not included in the feed. Source titles do turn up in the HTML version. This is a bit of a negative that should be fixed.
  • You can post the feeds anywhere, but you need a Westlaw login to get the full article.

All in all a great effort that can open a lot of Westlaw to a format that is easy to get a hold of and use.  A coolest tool.

linux slacker writes "Ignalum Linux 'is an intuitive graphical environment that works right out of the box and offers unrivaled compatibility with Microsoft Windows' or so says their website. The company is owned by four university students in Ontario, and one of their goals is to allow companies to incorporate Linux into their Windows environment, so users could still run Word, Excel and other popular Microsoft fare."

Mono Beta 1

Mono Beta 1:"Novell is proud to introduce the first Beta release of Mono, an open source implementation the .NET framework for use on Linux, Unix and Windows System. "

Novell also lets us know that Mono is being used now:
"Mono is currently being used internally at Novell to develop:

  • iFolder 3.0: a file system that provides synchronization, peer-to-peer sharing and metadata handling.
  • F-Spot: a photo management application.
  • Extensibility for the Nautilus file manager and hooks into iFolder.

Outside of Novell, Mono is being used by many, including SourceGear which relies on it to run its Vault application on Linux and is also what OpenLink's Virtuoso database uses for its cross platform .NET Runtime Hosting functionality."

Let's review.  Novell has the Nterprise Suite which includes things such as eDirectory, Netware, Suse, Ximian, Mono.  Sounds like a pretty good framework to build a one-stop networked solution that includes servers, desktops, and a development platform.  Others have a similar setup (Sun comes directly to mind), but maybe Novell can muster enough umph to target some of MSFT's market share.

ATI's 3D card impervious to Nvidia's GeForce - CNET reviews
ATI's 3D card impervious to Nvidia's GeForce - CNET reviews - "ATI's new 3D cards demonstrate marked superiority over Nvidia's new high-end chip, proving themselves faster overall in a smarter design. With new cards still on the horizon, the picture may change, but for now, ATI's Radeon X800 series is the 3D technology to beat."
